All seven gears
Grouped gears Low (0-1) Middle (2-4) High (5-6)
Ball shares for the Fab Four and the top-seven men's Test baseline. The baseline pools every delivery faced by batters in positions 1-7 in the men's Tests covered by the available ball-by-ball data. The stacked bars show all seven gears individually; the right-hand panel groups them into low (0-1), middle (2-4) and high (5-6) gears. From Williamson through Smith and Kohli to Root, low-gear share falls as middle-gear share rises, producing a clear staircase. Their high-gear shares, however, remain strikingly similar despite those different preferences lower down the gearbox.
